My ego savors
A familiar reflection
Those blue eyes,
Two exclamation points
That I copied onto
His face
My ego searches
For traces
Of myself
In him
Believing
He appreciates
Those things
About himself
And by doing so
Appreciates me
My ego grieves
What is different
Unfamiliar, missing
Magnifying
The distance
Between us
While I recall
His tiny head
Nestled
In the crook
Of my armpit,
My arm around him,
As he looked up with
Those blue eyes
And said
“I love you Mommy!!”
